Function
The 4D concrete sander equipped with marine diamond segments is very useful for treating and polishing concrete. The diamond segment is made up of industrially synthesised diamond particles that are extremely hard and abrasive. These particles enable precise sanding and grinding operations on concrete surfaces.
A 50-grit diamond segment for floor sanders is designed for roughing and ‘structured’ preparation of the substrate. More aggressive than an 80-grit segment, it is still coarse enough to remove material: small waves, slight excess concrete thickness, traces of laitance or the beginnings of cement paste opening. It can also be used for vigorous cleaning on stone, concrete or terrazzo.
This grain leaves a surface profile that is still marked, but already more regular than with a 16/30. It is therefore an ideal intermediate step before moving on to finer grain sizes (80, 120, etc.) or a polishing phase.
A 50 grit is generally preferred over an 80 grit when the substrate requires more correction: micro-levelling, small excess thicknesses or slightly undulating concrete. In these situations, an 80 grit would be too slow or not incisive enough.
Grit 50 is also well suited as a first pass on lightly coated concrete, stone or terrazzo, when the aim is to effectively open up the surface without digging as deeply as with a very coarse grit such as 16–30.
Common uses with diamond segments
1. Surface levelling: A concrete sander with a diamond segment can be used to level uneven concrete surfaces, eliminating imperfections, irregularities and differences in level. This is particularly important when preparing concrete floors for the installation of floor coverings such as tiles, wooden floors or epoxy coatings.
2. Sanding and polishing: It is also used to sand rough concrete surfaces to achieve a smoother, more uniform finish. In addition, the diamond segment can be used to polish concrete, giving it a shiny, wear-resistant finish.
3. Removal of coatings: The concrete sander with a diamond segment can be used to remove existing coatings such as paint, resins, adhesives, sealants or plasters from concrete surfaces.
4. Preparing surfaces for repair: When repairing damaged concrete, a grinder equipped with a diamond segment opens the pores of the surface to facilitate the adhesion of new repair materials, such as repair mortars or fillers.
5. Exposing aggregates: Some concrete design projects require the exposure of aggregates (aggregates) present in the concrete. A concrete sander with a diamond segment can remove the thin layer of cement around the aggregates, highlighting their natural appearance and providing an aesthetic finish.
It is important to note that using a concrete sander with a diamond segment requires a certain amount of expertise, as incorrect use can cause irreparable damage to the concrete surface.
