This generates a higher starting torque, helping the motor to reach operating speed quickly. Once the motor has reached cruising speed, the starting capacitor is no longer needed, and another type of capacitor, called a working capacitor, takes over to improve the motor's energy efficiency during normal operation.

As for when to consider changing the starting capacitor, here are some signs that it may be faulty or at the end of its life:

1. Difficulty starting: if the single-brush sander has difficulty starting, if it makes strange noises or if it refuses to start despite a correct power supply, this could be a sign that the start capacitor is not working properly.

2. Decrease in power: if you notice a significant drop in the power or speed of the sander, this could be due to a faulty starting capacitor that is not providing the electrical impulse required to start the motor.

3. Motor overheating: a defective starting capacitor can cause the sander motor to overheat, as the motor may not start properly and may consume more energy to compensate for the lack of electrical impulse.

4. Capacitor leakage or swelling: If you notice visual signs of degradation, such as electrolyte leakage or capacitor swelling, it is probably time to replace the capacitor.
